Why on earth have we actually learn in University/College?

I just do not get it. Ask yourself, what you actually want to achieve from higher education level. My answer is because I want to learn something new and practical. Nevertheless, if you notice, that is not how it works in college/university. Memorizing is what most of us doing to get an A for most subjects except the one with calculation. Aren't the lecturers supposed to teach us something that we could use in real life for example how to fix our own PC, or even how to do well in presentation (interpersonal skills)? Of course there are other good examples but what I am saying is that why do we need to learn something that we cannot apply in real life. For instant, I was an IT student in college, learn about computer networking but the problem was at the end of the semester, none of us were able to setup a network between PCs. That is because all we did were memorizing the notes for the exams (mid-term and final exam) rather that "do" the networking and after a week, we forgot everything that we memorized.

During our secondary schools, we always argue why we have to take so many subjects, which of them are something that we are not interested? Surprisingly, I have no complained back then because I understood the concept. I called it AN OPTION. We take many subjects so that we can decide where we are going after that. If you do not like physics, do not take something that related with physics in college/university. So, we tend to memorize everything so that we won't see D in our report card. As simple as that. But the real issue now is I do not believed that the concept is going to work at university/college.

I have no problem with the system but the real problem will occur when we start to work for others. By that time, we will realize how important that is to have a practical experiences rather than memorizing theories. If you cannot remember something you can always go and find it on the internet or books but if you cannot do what they ask you to do, you are done. So anyone tell me, what can we do about it? Why do we spend a lot of money and time for something that is not worth it? Do we actually pay for the education or for the certificate?

Why-oo-Why,
